diy farmhouse pots
I’m so happy to be popping by again from Making it in the Mountains, where I blog about our journey to transform our first fixer-upper into the {farmhouse} of our dreams, one DIY project at a time. It’s no secret that I love all things farmhouse style. There’s just something about the soft, muted colours, the rich textures and filling a space with bright whites and wood tones … it all just comes together to create such a warm and cozy space.
But it can’t ALL be white.
One of my favourite ways to inject a bit of colour and life into a space is to throw a few plants into the mix. I can’t wait to show y’all how I created these lovely diy farmhouse pots…
Armed with some plain old terracotta pots, a bit of spackle, and some white paint (I used Cloud White from Benjamin Moore), I got straight to work. I started by very haphazardly slapping some spackle over the outside of my pots to add a bit of texture. I wanted these pots to have an old, weathered feel, so I tried to be as random as I could with this, leaving lots of bumps and variations.
After letting the spackle dry for an hour or so, it was time to add some paint. Because I was aiming for that rustic look, I decided to water down my paint using a 1/1 ratio of paint and water to give it some transparency. Then, with a very light hand, I painted around the outside of my pots, quickly wiping off any excess with a dry rag to let as much of the terracotta (and spackle) show through as possible. I was really careful to work in small sections so that my paint wouldn’t dry before I was able to wipe some of it away.
I still can’t believe how quick and easy these sweet little pots were to make! And I am head over heels in love with how they turned out!
