Macramé lamp redo
Oh my heck ya’ll, remember when you saw this macramé lamp from our grandmothers house recently inherited to us? (If you don’t remember then get to following us on Insta! ;)) Anyway we took your advice and made this puppy over! We could have entered the “before” in Better After’s Ugly Lamp Contest… although this lamp actually looks pretty compared to this years winner, Bacon Barf. (Seriously, check it out. Ha!)
Besides missing the original finial, it has frayed macrame everywhere (props to the artist who tied all those decorative knots!) and pieces on the shade are falling apart. It is definitely time to give this piece new life! We started by separating the shade from the base then taped off where we didn’t want the paint to touch.
We chose Americana’s multisurface paint in a cheery yellow hue called Lemon Zest that really brightens the lamp up! (Get it, BRIGHTen? Haha! Cheesy, I know.) This paint is really versatile and covered the macrame rope in only one coat just using a cheapie foam brush. Nice! We paired it with a pretty glass finial that came from our other grandmothers old lamp… yep, we are pretty sentimental, can you tell? 😉
While the paint is drying, take some scissors and cut away allll those knots that look like they took forever to do on the lamp shade.
We spray painted the shade in Krylon’s flat black.
Once the paint was dry, remove the finial (we were just seeing how it looked sans shade) then put the lamp back together. Once again folks, we are always amazed what a little paint can do to transform a piece… and in this case, a little elbow grease with snipping all the lamp shade details away! Here’s a little peek at the new and improved macramé lamp sans original shade…
…and with the black shade. We are loving the exposed lamp shade/industrial vibe trending with lamps right now!
This is Kelli’s favorite look for this lamp but I personally love the new drum shade action goin’ on!
Either way you wear it, it’s nice to see this once-drab macramé lamp freshened up and brought back to life! Seriously, are these lamps even related?! 😉

You can totally pull off macrame!! Thanks, girls!
Wowza! Was that thing even safe to have electricity running through it?! Fab makeover, I love the sunny yellow! Not grandmas lamp anymore!
Hahahah, thanks for the chuckle!
cute! So much better, and I love the drum shade too!
Kris likes the drum, I like the open look. Interesting! (Although I wouldn’t put it in my house with either shade (; It’s going to another sisters’ home)
Wowza!!! A million times better now. Although, I’m sure in it’s time it was a gorgeous piece.

Lol I don’t know if it was ever appropriate in any time period. Haha but it’s a big part of our memories of our sweet Nana (;
