DIY Leather Skirt

We wanted to share a fun fashion tutorial with you guys that you could totally wear all year long but was totally spring inspired. Scroll down to learn how to make this DIY leather skirt.

Ingredients

  • 1 yard  vegan leather
  • 1 12″ invisible zipper
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors

Instructions

  • Using 1 yard of  54″ leather, cut 6″ x 54″ along the bottom. Measure your waist, divide by 2 and add 2″ and cut your waistband piece from the 6″ strip.  The remaining square of leather should be about 54″ x 30″. This is your skirt.
  • I was using scrap pieces so I had 2 pieces for my waistband that I sewed into one long strip that measured my waist measurement + 2″. Fold waistband in half. Sew a basting stitch along the top edge of the leather square along the 54″ length and leave long strings at the end. {Basting stitch just means loosest tension and longest stitch!}
  • Carefully, pull one thread from one side of the stitch to gather the skirt.
  • With the waistband folded in half, match the right side of the gathered skirt to the waistband and stitch along top.
  • Add your invisible zipper to the side. Your zipper will have instructions on how to install an invisible zipper, but it’s a little confusing if you’ve never attempted one before. Simply flip the zipper upside down and match the right side of the zipper to the left side of the skirt, then repeat on the opposite side. If you think edge to edge and right sides together you can totally do it first try.
  • Zip up the zipper and sew the rest of the side together.
  • Flip right side out, try it on and be excited you just made a simple A-line skirt by yourself!
