DIY Glitter Dipped Holder

This fancy little project does double duty. Glitter dipped makeup brush holders make a great Christmas gift AND it’s perfect for organizing those little things on the vanity. Hello everyone, my name is Jes and I am visiting from My DIY Envy. Last month my little sister turned 14 and since we have 15 years in between us I am always looking for ways to spend time with her and connect. On a recent trip home, we made these cute DIY glitter dipped makeup holders for her room and they go perfectly with the gold glam look she’s trying to achieve.

A couple of months ago my mom found and painted this beautiful bedroom set. Using a little direction from my ebook, With {Re}Purpose, my mom did this whole set for my sister’s room. With a brand new bed, dresser and vanity my sister was set to glam up her space with accessories. These glitter makeup holders fit right in with the rest of her decor!

What you will need:

  • Glass cup (or mason jar)
  • Mod Podge (or spray adhesive)
  • Glitter (I went with the larger glitter pieces but the fine glitter would look good too)
  • Brush (sponge brushes are cheap and you can throw it away after)
  • Painters tape
  • Two paper plates or plastic containers (optional)

I’m a little bit of a perfectionist. Ok, so it’s pretty bad but there are a few things you can do to help if you are too. Buy glass cups or jars that are straight. No curve, no taper, no texture. This will help when you are taping off the bottom of the cup. If you are using a spray adhesive be sure to tape off anything you don’t want glitter on.

Your first step is to tape off the section you want to have glitter on. In this case, I wanted the bottom. Then brush on the Mod Podge. I chose to put it up to the bottom edge of the glass. Nothing on the very bottom.

Use the two paper plates to catch the glitter as you sprinkle it onto the Mod Podge. I found that you only have to sprinkle a little and then you can use what falls into the plate for the rest of the cup. Hence the second plate so you can go back and forth.

I removed the tape while the Mod Podge was still wet and discovered some of it had seeped through the tape. There is a slight taper to our cups so it was hard to get a good seal. It easily wiped off since it was still wet but you can make sure to brush in a downward direction (away from the tape) to avoid this issue.

Spray a coat of clear sealer to ensure it doesn’t flake off. You can also add vinyl lettering for an extra touch. My sister had post-its with words like “brushes,” “lips,” and “eyes.” I think it would be cool to get a picture of eyelashes and lips.
