easy winter chalkboard design

Hello friends! So happy to be stopping by again from Making it in the Mountains, where I blog about our journey to renovate our first fixer upper to create the {farmhouse} of our dreams!

I hope you enjoyed the most wonderful Christmas with your families! It’s hard to believe we’re just a few short days from a brand new year ahead! Though I plan to stretch the celebration as long as I possibly can, it won’t be long before we’re packing away all of those beautiful Christmas decorations for another year. Which also means that it’ll be time again to change up the artwork on the chalkboard wall in our farmhouse style family room.

One of my very favourite parts of our new family room space is this big old vintage green chalkboard wall (you can find the tutorial for it here)! That bold green just brings so much personality to the space and I’ve had so much fun changing out the artwork and lettering on it as often as can! I’m so excited to be popping over today to share a super cute chalkboard design perfect for the Winter ahead. You won’t believe how simple it was to create!

Of course, I started with my blank slate…

I began by drawing several lines of varying lengths straight down from the ceiling’s edge and then adding a very simple star shape to the end of each one.

Then, by adding a few lines and/ or dots, each star began to start looking much more like a snowflake. With each little snowflake, I would draw out my lines and then use my finger to lightly blend the chalk to soften those lines up a bit. I tried out a few different designs – after all, no two snowflakes are alike!

And finally, I added a sweet little bow onto each string to make it look as if those pretty snowflakes were hanging from the ceiling. The last step was lettering that little phrase. The writing is always the part I dread the most – I seem to erase and re-write things at least a zillion times. Luckily chalk is pretty darn easy to erase!

With a bit of trial and error, making sure I got the placement of each word just right (and straight!), I simply wrote out my words very lightly with my chalk and then went back over everything to darken it all up.

I used my finger to shade some parts of the letters in to add a bit of depth.

And, with everything looking just the right amount of perfectly imperfect, I pushed the furniture back underneath it all.

  1. What a gorgeous wall and winter decoration. I am beyond charmed by it (and a bit jealous). I want a green chalkboard wall. And I want it no-oow! (said in my best Varuca Salt voice). Thanks for sharing at the #ThisIsHowWeRoll Link Party.
